Galerie Nicolas Robert Toronto is pleased to present A Preferable Option, a group exhibition of works by Caroline Douville, Babak Golkar, Shawn Hunt, Erin Jane Nelson, Emmanuel Osahor, Geoffrey Pugen, geetha thurairajah, Carl Trahan, Justin Weiler, and Nicholas Zirk.
The works in A Preferable Option offer a collective response to living through the slow apocalypse. Facing the profound and the mundane at once, each work displays an aesthetics of anxiety that ranges from haunting and inquisitive, to mysterious and playful. When the question is no longer if the world as we know it will end, but when, we can either throw our hands up in despair or make the most of the time we have. Artists are uniquely positioned to take on the enormity of our finitude because art is, at its core, an act of faith – creative production embodies an inherent optimism. If Camus was right and the only way to understand the meaning of life truly is to confront the possibility of death, then we must reimagine our relationship to the present by coming to terms with our uncertainty.
