Galerie Nicolas Robert is pleased to present Sur les cendres des astres, a new body of work by Carl Trahan, in which he continues his reflections around the writings of philosopher Eugene Thacker. Using drawing, painting, sculpture, and olfactory art, the artist evokes a Thakerian world-without-us, a world that could both predate and follow our presence on this planet we call Earth, in a cosmos that is indifferent to our existence. Through the various works of the exhibition, Carl Trahan suggests we may find this world—which is now possible to conceive as the spectre of extinction hovers above us—in the figure of the night, in nihilism, and in dark mysticism.
Carl Trahan has presented his work in solo and group exhibitions in Canada and abroad, including Havana, Berlin, Rome, and Créteil (France). He has also exhibited at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec—who granted him its contemporary art prize in 2016—at the Musée d'art contemporain des Laurentides and the Musée d'art de Joliette. His works are found in the collections of the MNBAQ, the MAJ, the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, and the National Library and Archives of Quebec.
