Caroline Cloutier
Light Switch
March 21 to April 25, 2020
By creating images that simultaneously reveal and modify the architectural volumes of a specific place, Caroline Cloutier's practice interrogates photography's capacity to document and transform reality. With the help of framing and the implementation of mirrors, her previous works effectively sculpted space while subtly eliding the rationalism at the core of photography's referential character. With Light Switch, the artist utilizes light as her medium to make appear, inside the delimited zone of her apartment, formal compositions in colour. While necessary to the practice of photography, light here supersedes this essential role, becoming a tool in the transformation of space, and, in turn, the object represented. Taking recourse to various natural and artificial light sources, the artist exploits the optical effects of colour, depth and form that they create.
