David Elliott
All Kinds of Time

June 18 to July 23, 2022

Galerie Nicolas Robert is pleased to present All Kinds of Time by David Elliott. The exhibition showcases the artist’s recent dioramas alongside paintings created more than fifteen years ago, underlining both the changes in his practice and the consistency of his vision. Elliott’s usual buoyancy and sense of whimsy are present but there is also a distinct starkness to this particular selection of works. In the paintings, clearly rendered fragments hang suspended on bare gesso grounds. Some are constructed like hieroglyphs, each element standing alone without overlap. The collage boxes, especially the tiny interiors address the solitude and isolation that we are only now emerging from. Using easily recognizable and relatable imagery, Elliott, a brilliant bricoleur, continues to surprise the viewer, tapping into the mysteries of time and space.

David Elliott has exhibited his work both nationally and internationally for over 40 years. His large-scale canvases are included in the collections of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. Recent solo exhibitions include Million Dollar Bash at Galerie Antoine Ertaskiran (2017) and Seventh Heaven (2020) and Sweet Spot (2021) at Galerie Nicolas Robert. Elliott also curates and writes about art. His feature article Grave Nowhere: The Unstoppable Paintings of Philip Guston appeared in the Fall 2020 issue of Border Crossings and he recently organized an overview of R. Holland Murray’s work in the context of Black History Month at the Fondation Guido Molinari.
