David Elliott
Sweet Spot

December 11, 2021, to January 22, 2022

Galerie Nicolas Robert is pleased to present Sweet Spot, David Elliott's second solo exhibition at the gallery, showcasing the artist’s most recent explorations of collaged imagery in shallow theatrical boxes. With vivid colours and poetic juxtapositions, Elliott deploys a repertoire of invented figures and still life props to create worlds that are at once familiar and uncanny. The current work was shaded both by COVID restrictions, and Elliott’s eviction, along with roughly 100 other artists, from his studio on Rue Bellechasse. The idea of a haven or a sanctuary runs through many of the new collage boxes, whether it is the solace and excitement of the studio or simply the intimate shrine-like domestic spaces we create for ourselves.

David Elliott has exhibited his work both nationally and internationally for over 40 years. His large-scale canvases are included in the collections of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. Recent solo exhibitions include Million Dollar Bash at Galerie Antoine Ertaskiran (2017) and Seventh Heaven at Galerie Nicolas Robert (2020). Elliott also curates and writes about art. His feature article Grave Nowhere: The Unstoppable Paintings of Philip Guston appeared in the Fall 2020 issue of Border Crossings magazine and he is currently organizing an overview of R. Holland Murray’s work in the context of Black History Month at the Fondation Guido Molinari (February-April 2022).
