Feria Material - Expo Reforma, CDMX
Booth B02
We are thrilled to present new paintings and sculptures by Caroline Douville and Simon Petepiece at Feria Material in Mexico City, from February 6-9, 2025.
Caroline Douville’s practice blends digital research with elements from popular culture, particularly the figure of the zombie, to explore themes of colonial history and Afro-descendant identity. Through her “Ghostly Archives” series, Douville distorts images derived from both academic sources and popular media, creating a tension between fiction and reality. She also delves into Haitian culture, specifically examining voodoo practices and objects associated with zombification, such as the porcupine fish. Douville is currently an artist in residence at Casa Lü Parque where she is researching the Haitian diaspora’s experience in Mexico City. She is exploring spiritual resistance in both Mexican and Haitian cultures, and how the internet facilitates access to cultural narratives.
Petepiece’s practice involves working directly with construction materials, such as drywall, and steel studs. He manipulates these industrial products, often seen as mundane, to explore their emotive qualities and cultural significance. By incorporating these materials into sculptures and two-dimensional works, Petepiece combines the industrial language of architecture with personal and historical references, creating pieces that both adhere to and distort traditional uses of space. His work shifts between drawing and sculpture, where imagined spaces become physical artifacts, offering viewers new ways to engage with their daily environments.
