Ghazaleh Avarzamani

Ghazaleh Avarzamani’s practice seeks to challenge hegemonic power structures in knowledge production by considering a range of spaces and methodologies for interactivity and play. She frequently utilizes signs made familiar through popular culture and materials associated with everyday life – such as board games, origami, and playground structures – as she is interested in testing the limits of knowledge in terms of reality and play. Her recent work explores the paradoxical realities behind educational methodologies by referencing game systems and cultural manuals. Play is activated as a complex process of social and political influence carrying radical possibilities for subversion and pleasure.

Ghazaleh Avarzamani (b. 1980, Tehran) is currently based in London (UK) and holds an MFA from Central Saint Martins, London and from the Azad Art University, Tehran. She was the recipient of the Red Mansion Prize in 2013, won the Monographic exhibition of the year from the Ontario Association of Art Galleries in 2019, and was longlisted for the Sobey Art Award in 2022. Her work has been featured in several exhibitions nationally and internationally, including at the Toronto Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Aga Khan Museum (Toronto), Koffler Centre of the Arts (Toronto), Ab-Anbar Gallery (Tehran), Asia House (London), Light Gallery (London), Frieze Sculpture Park (London), Bocconi Gallery (Milan), and Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium Museum (Norway) among others. In 2022, she participated in a residency at the prestigious Delfina Foundation in London, UK, and was part of the first cohort of artists in residence at Tracey Emin’s studios in Margate, UK. Her work is part of private and public collections such as the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), Rockefeller Center, Arsenal Contemporary, MOCA Toronto, TD Art Collection and Red Mansion.
