Louis Bouvier
Je pensais justement à la machine qui imprime les mémoires
January 29 to March 5, 2022
Galerie Nicolas Robert is proud to present Je pensais justement à la machine qui imprime les mémoires, an exhibition by Louis Bouvier bringing together a selection of works from his past two years of research. Bouvier employs artistic means to propose an interpretation of the idea of anachronism. He uses montage to multiply the visual strata, establishing a horizontal reading of art history and its canons. His photo-realistic drawings and hybrid sculptures aim to transform conventional temporal periodization by deploying a personal vision of history and archeology in the gallery space. The exhibition combines a multitude of media and techniques: stone, bronze, casting, wood, plaster, direct carving, watercolour, lead, graphite, oil, wood pencils—a proliferation conducive to the creation of new points of contact that, given the chance, can reconfigure one’s “memory machine” with the imprint of a new constellation of links.
Louis Bouvier draws his inspiration from a multitude of sources such as history, archeology as well as alternative movements and cultures. His career, which began professionally in 2010, has led him to present his work in Quebec, Canada, the United States, and Europe. He has participated in numerous international residencies: Banff Center (Alberta), PILOTENKUECHE (Germany), and NARS foundation (Brooklyn). Supported on several occasions by the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, he exhibited in various artist centers: Center Clark (Montreal), L'Écart (Rouyn-Noranda), Caravansérail (Rimouski), Galerie Sans Nom (Moncton), and Maison des artistes francophone (Winnipeg). Bouvier holds a master's degree in Visual and Media Arts from UQAM.
